Modulations Series

This is a recent series that began as an experimental project layering and modulating the surface of small 4x4” mixed media panels. I am drawn in by subtlety….a close inspection of delicate variations in color, mark making, the trace of the hand. The title of the series arose from the idea of such subtle modulations, but also the notion of module. These small cradled panels are designed to be one-of-a-kind tiny works that can live alone (art for small spaces) or work together in combination to create a larger work, perhaps a narrative or a conversation between color, pattern and image. This ongoing series combines acrylic, ink, water soluble ink pencils and sometimes beads or other found objects created directly on panel or on paper mounted on panel.
